About water
Water is used for many different purposes at schools and in the community. However, most of the water we use has been processed so it’s good enough for drinking. And when we water plants with it or wash things in the sink, that drinking-quality water makes its way into streams or gutters and goes out into the ocean.
How Tasmanian schools are conserving water
All AuSSI-Tas schools do an audit of their water use as part of their School Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) before they take any action. Students enjoy doing water audits as it means they can get out of the classroom, searching the school grounds and getting wet and dirty! While they have fun they also learn a lot about water: how to measure it, about different irrigation systems, where to find the water meter and the different ways water is used around the school.
After a school does its own audit an official water auditor can come out and complete an audit with the school’s leadership team.
For your school to receive a water audit, you need to:
- Commit to becoming a sustainable school, and
- Obtain and complete a school walk-through water audit.
