About us
What is AuSSI about?
AuSSI stands for The Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative. This is a partnership between the Australian Government and the States and Territories to support schools to work towards a sustainable future.
AuSSI-Tas is the Tasmanian participant in this program.
Sustainability is more than just another school subject - participating schools actively include sustainable practices and processes across the curriculum and across the running of the school itself.
Our vision: to help all Tasmanian schools and their communities to become sustainable
Schools are leading the change in their communities - students can bring about change through developing their understandings, knowledge and confidence to evaluate and make wise choices.
We work with schools and their whole school community so they become more sustainable and reduce their ecological footprint. Schools are encouraged to achieve measurable educational, environmental, social and economic outcomes.
Schools who participate in the AuSSI program benefit in these ways:
- development of a cohesive school environmental management plan that ties all aspects of the curriculum, infrastructure, finances and support together as an agreed blue print for the school
- support from the AuSSI-Tas project officers
- increased awareness and measurable contributions to issues like biodiversity, climate change, health and social impacts.
- teachers and students tackle real-life problems and projects within the curriculum
- opportunities for professional development around educating for sustainability
- the school becomes a model for sustainability within the local community
- build networks with the community and organisations
- apply for sustainability grants, awards and funding
- showcase and share AuSSI-Tas stories
